Pirin National Park is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It has
around 50 marble and granite peaks at an altitude of over 2,500
m. The mountain slopes dropping down to the valley are etched with
35 cirques of various sizes, and there are 186 lakes. The rare flower
edelweiss can be seen on the karst ridges high up in the mountain.
The evergreen spruce, fir and pine forests further down shelter
roe and red deer, wild boars, capercaillies and eagles. Here you
can also see Baikoushevata Moura (Baikoushev's Bosnian Pine), an
invaluable specimen of Bosnian Pine (Pinus leucodermis) that is
more than 1,300 years old. The park includes the Bayuvi Doupki and
Yulen nature reserves, which abound in indigenous plant and animal
species.
